Profile
Vinod Suresh graduated with a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai (formerly known as Madras). His PhD research in Chemical Engineering from Stanford University focusd on the dynamics of fluid flows subject to fluctuating forces. Towards the end of his doctoral work he became interested in studying flow and transport in biological systems.
As a postdocoral fellow at the University of Michigan Vinod investigated liquid flow and gas exchange in the lungs. His later postdoctoral work at the University of California, Irvine focused on studying nitric oxide transport and metabolism in the lungs using cell culture systems and mathematical modelling.
Research interests
Two major themes of Vinod’s current research are flow and transport in biological systems, and how the physical environment in which cells exist and the forces to which they are subjected influence their structure and function.
Vinod’s work uses a combination of experimental, mathematical and computational approaches to develop models that span multiple scales from the subcellular to the whole organ levels.
