Department of Engineering Science

Our research

With internationally renowned researchers, we have one of the best department research records in New Zealand, and continue to excel in bioengineering, fluid dynamics, operations research, signal processing and solid mechanics.

The core research of the department is the construction of mathematical models of a wide variety of engineering problems, together with their solution. These procedures can be broadly categorised under the headings of Bioengineering, Mechanics and Operations Research.

See our research overview for a summary description of each.

Research overview

Our core research can be broadly categorised under 'Mechanics' and 'Operations Research'.

Bioengineering

Our staff who specialise in bioengineering carry out their research under the umbrella of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute.

Coastal and Marine Science

Some of our staff are part of the Joint Graduate School in Coastal and Marine Science

Fluid dynamics

Advancing our understanding of flow phenomena through mathematical, computational and experimental means.

Geothermal, reservoir engineering and environmental fluids

Focusing on research, teaching and consulting activities related to geothermal energy, particularly on the numerical simulation of geothermal reservoirs.

Network design and simulation

The core research focus here is the use of optimisation techniques and simulation for the design and evaluation of networks.

Operations research

Creating models based on a scientific approach using observation, data and analysis to assist in identifying solutions to management based problems.

Signal processing

Specialising in developing signal processing strategies for applications by adapting current models of signal processing techniques.

Solid mechanics

Focused on the modelling of geomechanics, thermomechanics, geotechnical problems and manufacturing processes for composite materials.
