Research | Current

My research centres on understanding how hot fluids move through the crust. Such fluids may be heated groundwater pregnant with precious metals, or molten rock from beneath or within the crust. I bring a structural geologist's perspective to this problem. My projects range from fundamental studies of continental break-up to applied structural geology of geothermal and epithermal systems. 

Project 1: Mineral Exploration Models Programme (funded through MBIE, New Zealand 2014-18)

New Zealand has a strong mining heritage with gold mining in particular helping to develop and support the New Zealand economy from the 1850s to the present. This newly-funded collaboration between Universities of Auckland, Waikato and Otago, and GNS Science, will carry out research on NZ's gold deposits to characterise features that can be used in mineral exploration to target and explore for new deposits. My research in this programme centers on identifiying vectors to mineralised structures at regional and deposit scale. I have partially-funded MSc thesis topics available to NZ domestic students from 2015 in relation to this programme - please contact me if you would like more information. In addition, I am seeking PhD applicants with strengths in geophysics and structural geology to work with me in this programme as soon as possible - see advert.

Project 2. How is the transfer of heat and mass localised in magmatic extensional provinces?

I have ongoing projects investigating structural and tectonic controls on the hydrothermal fluid flow in Indonesia, New Zealand, Chile and elsewhere. Although my expertise is structural geology, I work with geochemists, geophysicists, volcanologists and sedimentologists to address this question. 

Teaching | Current

I teach introductory structural geology and tectonics in the undergraduate Earth Science programme and I contribute to a post graduate course targeting geothermal and mineral exploration, Geology 703.
