During my undergraduate years, I was heavily involved in two major organisations in the University: Chiasma and Nexus. My involvement in these organisations changed my perspective of the biotech industry and I was sure I eventually wanted to end up in this industry. This was further reinforced by the summer internships I undertook at Brainz Instruments (then a start-up medical device company which was a Chiasma affiliate) and at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.

Following my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering, I decided to work in the industry to gain some experience. I was offered a graduate position at Fisher & Paykel Healthcare as an Operations Engineer where I worked for about one year. Although I loved the work, I knew I wanted to expand my knowledge base in the field of biomechanics, which is why I decided to pursue a Masters degree in the USA. I am currently completing my MS in Biomedical Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

My degree is fairly research oriented and I am specialising in bone research. Furthermore, I am also working as a Research Assistant, which gives me an opportunity to delve deeper and explore more on my research topic – effects of low intensity vibrations on the alveolar bone. My undergrad experience in the fourth year project under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Pullan helped me immensely in furthering my interest in the field of biomechanics.

I believe my experiences as an undergrad working in student enterprises such as Chiasma and Nexus and my work experience, along with the backing of my undergrad degree in biomedical engineering, has given me an opportunity to interact with people of very different backgrounds both in New Zealand and overseas and has helped me gain a global perspective on the biotech and science industries. This has helped pave a path for me to do something I absolutely love!
