Research for current postgraduate students

Our department has one of the best research records of any university department in New Zealand. It has internationally renowned researchers and continues to excel in all its research areas.

Research is carried out in the following areas:

  • Biomedical Engineering, including orthopaedic design, ventricular mechanics, bioinstrumentation, electrocardiagraphic modelling, biological transport phenomena and the modelling of genetic networks.
  • Fluid Dynamics, including petroleum engineering, aero-acoustics, environmental fluid mechanics, nano fluidics, flow in porous media and hydrodynamics.
  • Operations Research, including mathematical programming, production planning, simulation, network optimisation and combinatorial optimisation.
  • Signal Processing, including signal analysis, nonlinear dynamical systems, artificial neural networks, wavelets, independent component analysis.
  • Solid Mechanics, including the thermomechanical foundations of solid mechanics, geomechanics, computational mechanics, composite and fibrous materials.
