The University of Auckland’s human-powered submarine ‘Taniwha’ has received some ample media coverage over the past week. Designed and built by staff and students from the University's Auckland Bioengineering Institute (ABI) and Department of Engineering Science, the Taniwha is the only human-powered submarine in the Southern Hemisphere, and is currently the world champion for non-propellor submarines. It is also reflective of our students' passion for engineering and design work beyond the classroom.

The Taniwha team will be competing against twelve other teams at the European International Submarine Race in the UK in July, where they will also be defending their championship title and aiminmg to set a new speed record. Their efforts have recently been featured on Seven Sharp and Newshub.

You can follow the team's progress on Facebook.
